Former Philippines Chief Justice Gets Papal Award

Retired Philippines chief justice Hilario Davide Jr. was conferred with a Papal award yesterday for his “exemplary life not only as a Catholic lay person but also as a family man, a government servant and a church advocate.”

Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Vidal presented the him with the Papal Award of the Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Sylvester during a Mass at the Blessed Pedro Calungsod Shrine at the Archbishop’s Palace in Cebu City.

Davide won the award in 2007 but the conferment was delayed due to his busy schedule. Davide was chief justice from 1998 to 2005 and was then immediately appointed ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations.
